Mystical Warriors of the Ring: Cero

So, 2016 is almost over (thank God for that), and what better way to help close it out here on Little Weirdos than with a new post on Mystical Warriors of the Ring -- an indie mini figure line based around a fun animal wrestler storyline that I've been covering since it began in 2013.

As you might know, the creators of MWOTR make both mass-produced PVC / plastic figures and smaller batches of figures in urethane / resin. This year there's been a focus on the latter, with some great new sculpts introduced in limited quantities -- the latest of which is the new "Giant" character, Cero the rhino.

According to a brief character bio on the MWOTR website: "With the bulk of Goliath, Cero charges into the ring taking down any and all who stand in his way. He is no ordinary Rhino, born and raised near a Volcano in Hawaii he has adapted to the heat thus changing the color of his skin."

This horned hulk is awesome. He has a fantastic sculpt with tons of personality. There's even an arm tattoo on the sculpt! It would be great to see him become a PVC production piece in the future.

As of writing this, there are still multiple colors of urethane Cero figures available in the MWOTR online shop, in addition to some other recent releases like a pack of plastic accessories and urethane figures of Talos and Referee Barker, two other sculpts from this year.

According to the website, there are some "really big plans" in store for the line's 5th anniversary in 2017, so there should be plenty of MWOTR goodness to look forward to.

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: MUSCLE flesh figures & red Goliath

The Mystical Warriors of the Ring toy line turns 3 years old this month! MWOTR releases have been coming out steadily since the line's debut, and this fall brings some new colors of PVC figures to add to the roster.

First is the popular Glyos-compatible, articulated Goliath sculpt in red--"Blood Red Metal," to be exact. This metallic red is an extremely attractive color that really suits the character well. It's currently available for $6 through the MWOTR online store.

In celebration of the third anniversary, we're also seeing Series 1, Series 2 and Goliath re-released in the most classic color for "little rubber guys"--MUSCLE flesh/pink! That's a total of 7 PVC figures coming in this color, with Series 1 and 2 consisting of 3 figures each and Goliath packaged by himself. You might remember that the Series 1 three-pack was released in flesh in 2013, but it wasn't that close of a match to MUSCLE flesh. The new release is much more in line with that classic mini figure color so many collectors love.

These will debut at Designer Con later this month, with remaining stock to be added to the online store after the show.

Series 1 in MUSCLE flesh
Series 2 in MUSCLE flesh
Goliath in MUSCLE flesh
Original 2013 flesh, new MUSCLE flesh, & MUSCLE figure for comparison

As always, keep an eye on the MWOTR website for more updates.

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: Molie & clear green Goliath

Heads up! If you're a Mystical Warriors of the Ring fan, you'll want to know about a couple new releases going on sale this Saturday, August 22nd at noon CST in the MWOTR online store.

The first is a new PVC color of the stellar Glyos-compatible Goliath figure, which has been featured in detail on this site (see previous MWOTR coverage here). This time, the beastly brute comes in an incredibly vibrant transparent green. To Glyos collectors, this color is known as Neo-Phase Green. If you're a sucker for neon and/or clear figures like I am, it'll probably be your favorite version of Goliath yet. These bad boys will cost $6 each.

The Goliath gang grows
The second figure going up for sale is a brand new sculpt of the character Molie the announcer. This little guy is great fun -- a nod to the classic MUSCLE #162 announcer figure. He'll be available at some point down the line in PVC, but this initial release includes a limited amount of resin Molie figures. They'll be available for $10 each in two or three different colors, including clear neon green and blue/white swirl.

As always, check out the MWOTR blog for more information.

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: July 2015 releases

Mystical Warriors of the Ring is back once again, this time with some brand new PVC colors of its popular Goliath figure and Series 2 three-pack!

Goliath, which was first available in metallic green at the beginning of this year, and then in metallic black this spring, returns for the summer in two new colors: metallic bronze and glow-in-the-dark white.

With its Glyos compatibility (which means it has articulation and is made of multiple pieces that can be taken apart and put back together), hefty size and killer sculpt, it's safe to say Goliath is the most popular MWOTR release so far. I am sure a lot of people will be happy to be able to put together a whole gang of Goliaths in different colors.

The metallic bronze is an excellent color fit for the beastly king that he is, and really shows off all the intricacies of the sculpt.

The ever-popular glow-in-the-dark color is now available as well, which is a semi-translucent white color that glows yellowish-green when in the dark. In addition to Goliath, the Series 2 three-pack has also been given the GITD treatment.

The Series 2 trio was first released in metallic black in the spring, and consists of Ulric Wolfrom, Yvonne Wolfrom and Leo Corazon/Generations Lion.

When you hold them up to the light for a minute and then put them in the dark, the figures glow very strongly and look great.

All five figures are available now in the MWOTR shop, sold in the following ways:

- Metallic bronze Goliath: $6 each
- Glow-in-the-dark Goliath: $7 each
- Glow-in-the-dark bundle including Goliath and Series 2 three-pack: $15 each

The MWOTR line continues to go strong with new releases and projects, so be sure to keep an eye on mystwarriors.com to stay up-to-date.

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: Metallic black Series 2, Goliath

The Mystical Warriors of the Ring indie toy line was once again represented this past weekend at C2E2 in Chicago, marking its third year in a row at the convention. You might remember that it debuted there in 2013, when its first ever sets were sold in packs that included resin figures and a wrestling ring. There's been nonstop activity with MWOTR since then, including multiple resin and PVC figure releases. The latest offering, launched at C2E2, consists of three new Series 2 figures plus the popular Goliath figure, all in very attractive metallic black PVC!

First available in very limited quantities late last year as brown test-shot figures, the Series 2 three-pack has finally seen full release in the metallic black color. The set consists of Ulric Wolfrom, Yvonne Wolfrom and Leo Corazon/Generations Lion. They range from around 1.5 to a little under 2 inches, with Yvonne being the tallest. As per usual with MWOTR releases, the sculpts pack in a lot of detail for their small size.

Joining the trio is a new Evolutions Goliath, which first came out this January in metallic green. Since the character is one of the "giants' of the series, this figure is much larger and bulkier than the others. It's about 2 inches tall, but measures 3.5" across when his arms are positioned out. As I detailed when I reviewed the metallic green version, one of the things that makes this figure so awesome is that it makes use of the Glyos system, so it actually consists of multiple pieces that can be taken apart and put back together. This makes for many points of articulation and tons of different ways you can pose him. Goliath looks very sharp in this color. I love the way it allows for the light to catch the many different textures and details of the sculpt.

At C2E2 all four figures were offered in a bundle for $15, with the option to purchase additional Goliaths on top of that for $6. At the time of writing this, leftover stock from the show is still available to order online, and is being sold in the same way it was at the show. So, you can purchase a bundle including one Series 2 three-pack plus one Goliath for $15, or one Series 2 three-pack plus two Goliaths for $21. Head over to the MWOTR shop to pick some up.

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: Metallic green Evolution Goliath

A short while ago I posted about the fantastic Mystical Warriors of the Ring Evolution Goliath PVC figure, which so far was only briefly available last Fall in limited, brown-colored test shot versions. Back then, the color and exact release date of the actual production pieces were not yet revealed. Now, the time is finally almost here for Goliath to bust his way into everyone's collections, and he'll be looking better than ever in a stunning metallic emerald green!

According to the latest post on the MWOTR blog, the full production run of the figures will be in hand early the week of January 26th, so keep an eye on that site then for details of when you'll be able to grab one in their online store. The figures will cost $6 each.

In the meantime, I wanted to share some photos of the piece—which MWOTR's main man, Mark Vasquez, kindly sent over early for review. As I mentioned in the older post, Evolution Goliath makes use of the Glyos system, so it's made up of multiple pieces that can be taken apart and put back together, with articulation at the neck, arms, wrists, tail and thighs. You can put it into tons of different poses. Plus, the brilliant metallic green color really suits the character and allows all the details and personality of the sculpt to really pop. This all adds up an even more fun and appealing figure than the original urethane version, which was part of the set that introduced the line 2013. I'd say Evolution Goliath is a must-have toy!

Do you plan on picking one up?

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: Evolution Goliath & Series 2 test-shots

There's been some exciting news with the Mystical Warriors of the Ring toy line over the past couple weeks. In addition to the characters and preliminary sculpts of the upcoming Series 2 three-pack being revealed, there was also a big announcement that the line's crocodile character, Goliath, is coming soon as a Glyos-compatible figure in PVC.

Goliath comes as part of a new branch of MWOTR called "Evolution." The difference between Evolution Goliath and the other MWOTR figures released so far is that it makes use of the Glyos system, meaning that it's actually a mini action figure made up of different pieces that can be taken apart and put back together.

You might remember that Goliath was one of the figures in the first ever MWOTR set released in 2013. While that figure was made of urethane/resin and not articulated, the way Evolution Goliath is being produced is not only a clever method for getting this big, bulky guy out in PVC form, but it also allows for a very fun toy. The figure is articulated at the neck, tail, arms, wrists, and thighs, so it can be put into tons of different poses.

Evolution Goliath is expected to be released by year's end, but a limited number of "test shot" figures were already sold in the brown color seen here. The color of the figure for the actual upcoming release is yet to be revealed.

Depending on the success of this figure, we'll hopefully see some of the lines other "giant" characters get the Evolution treatment.

As for Series 2 of the basic MWOTR figure line, the three pack will consist of the following characters:
  • Ulric Wolfrom (updated sculpt from his previous urethane release)
  • Yvonne Wolfrom (Lapin Loco ring battle gear)
  • Generations Lion/Leo Corazon
These figures were also previewed in a limited batch as brown-colored test shots, but it should be noted that some changes were given to the factory and tweaks are being made. So, the figures shown here are not final and the actual production figures will have some differences.

New MWOTR PVC test shots with their older urethane counterparts

At the time writing this, some of the Series 2 test shot sets are still available to purchase here. The actual production figures are tentatively scheduled for release in January/February 2015.

Series 3 and 4 are already in the works too, so there should be plenty more to look forward to on the MWOTR front!

As always, for more info and to keep up with all the latest MWOTR news, keep an eye on the line's blog and new Facebook page.

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: Playmat, Tembo Jiwe, & Generations 5" lion!

Figure group shot on the new MWOTR playmat

A couple weeks ago I attended Chicago's C2E2, and there was one booth I knew I had to visit first while at the con: the Nerd City booth, where the latest offerings were on display and for sale from one of my favorite indie toy lines, Mystical Warriors of the Ring!

Last year's C2E2 was my first introduction to MWOTR, when I picked up the line's debut set at the show. Considering how much Fantastic Plastic Toys has accomplished with MWOTR since then, it's hard to believe only one year has passed. The rest of 2013 through early 2014 saw multiple limited edition resin figure releases that quickly sold out, in addition to a successful set of three figures produced in PVC, already released in a range of cool colors. Based on what was shown at C2E2, the line is keeping up the momentum and will be just as exciting for the rest of the year and beyond.

I am glad I got a chance to meet MWOTR's creator, Mark Vasquez, in person at the con. Mark is the nicest guy, and I'm really happy this line has been so successful for him and everyone involved. I also came home with an amazing haul of new MWOTR goodies. Let's take a look at these latest additions:

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: Pearlescent neon green PVC set

Arriving just in time for St. Patrick's Day, a brilliant new pearlescent neon green color of Mystical Warriors of the Ring PVC mini figures has been unleashed by Fantastic Plastic Toys!

This green is the first new color of MWOTR figures since they debuted in the PVC material late last year with flesh, red, glow-in-the-dark, pearlescent blue, and pearlescent black releases. As with those releases, the green set consists of three characters (from left to right in the above photo): Sheldon Sabre, Kayin Kungaa and The Widowmaker.

Up until now the pearlescent blue has been my favorite color, but the green gives it a run for its money. It's just so vibrant and really makes the figures jump out no matter where you have them displayed.

This is a convention exclusive color. You can find them at the Planet Comicon in Kansas City (from March 14-16) and C2E2 in Chicago (from April 25-27) for $9 per set. They're well worth it, so be sure to pick some up if you're attending one of the conventions, or have a buddy who is going grab you some.

As always, be sure to keep an eye on the MWOTR official site for all updates with the line, and check out a few more photos of the new green figures below.

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: New colors in PVC!

After releasing the first three non-resin Mystical Warriors of the Ring figures in a MUSCLE-like flesh as well as a candy apple red this Fall, Fantastic Plastic Toys has already added more colors to the PVC collection. The new colors include a shiny pearlescent blue, glow in the dark and pearlescent black (the black is not pictured in this post)!

Once again, the figures come in a three-pack of the following anthropomorphic wrestler characters: Sheldon Sabre (a tiger), The Widowmaker (a spider) and Kayin Kungaa (a gorilla).

The blue and glow sets are sold in collaboration with True Cast Studio and are available through the True Cast online store for $9 and $10 per set, respectively.

The black set is available for $9 from Jay's CD and Hobby.

The pearlescent blue is definitely my favorite color from this line to date. It's really beautiful and looks especially brilliant in person.

Here are a couple more photos showing the blue and glow sets in all their glory:

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: Treegarr & Sheldon Sabre

Shortly before the recent announcement and release of the first Mystical Warriors of the Ring figures to be produced in PVC (reviewed here), there were a couple more MWOTR characters released in resin that I hadn't yet shown here on Little Weirdos. Here they are!

The first of the two is JOHNNY "TREEGARR" STUMPZ. This figure was released in August, and per usual with MWOTR figures, quickly sold out.

Treegarr stands out a bit from the other MWOTR characters released to date in that he's a tree-man instead of an animal-man. Fantastic Plastic Toys collaborated with BigManToys for this one, with the figure being a re-tooled version of BigManToys' original Treegarr Sapling mini figure. The MWOTR version came packaged with a small trash can and some cards featuring cool artwork of the character.

This figure was produced and sold in three different colors: clear "lime green" as shown in this post, as well as "Aztec gold" and "magnetic blue."

Treegarr's one of my favorites from the line so far. He's just a really awesome character, and the figure sculpt has lots of fun detail (it's tough to capture all the detail when photographing clear figures, but hopefully you can see what I mean. You can also check out Treegarr in his other colors here).

SHELDON SABRE followed Treegarr in the MWOTR resin lineup. Sheldon's a character you might recognize. He was also included in the set of the three debut PVC figures this Fall, but the two figures have different sculpts in addition to being made out of different materials. Here, Sheldon is decked out in his robe while the PVC version is robeless and in a more rumble-ready pose.

This figure was sold at PowerCon and online in September and was released in two different colors: Thermal color change blue to white (which is pictured here) as well as metallic blue. The release included a comic book and art cards featuring the character.

Like most of the other resin figures in the line, Fantastic Plastic Toys produced robed Sheldon in collaboration with The Godbeast, and the result is top-notch. Once again, it's apparent there was a lot of effort in terms of quality control and attention to detail. I especially love the textured back of Sheldon's robe, which even has his name going across the top.

What about you? What do you think of Treegarr and Sheldon?

You can keep up with all the latest on current happenings and future releases at the Mystical Warriors of the Ring blog here.

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: Kayin Kungaa, Sheldon Sabre, & Widowmaker PVC figures

Last month I posted on the exciting news that certain figures from Fantastic Plastic Toys' indie mini figure line Mystical Warriors of the Ring were going to be produced in PVC instead of their typical harder resin material. Since then, they've been released and are now invading mini figure collections all over.

This set consists of the three animal-wrestler characters Kayin Kungaa (an ape), Sheldon Sabre (a tiger) and Widowmaker (a spider). The sets have been released in two different colors of plastic: a pink/flesh reminiscent of the classic M.U.S.C.L.E. color, and a vibrant candy apple red. Each three pack sells for the very affordable price of $9 via the True Cast Studio Store.

I received a flesh set, and I've got to say, if you are a fan of M.U.S.C.L.E. (or really, mini figures in general), you are going to want to own these toys. The amount of detail in the figures is superb, and the softer, more flexible PVC makes them more fun and a better fit among other mini figures.

Here's a closer look at the three debut PVC characters:

KAYIN KUNGAA, the ape, is definitely the hulk of the set. This ornery-looking dude is huge, especially when compared to the tiger character, Sheldon Sabre. In that way he reminds me of Goliath, the crocodile character from the very first MWOTR set, who also towers over the rest. It's cool to have this type of size variation in the line. It keeps things more interesting and just adds en extra element of fun.

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: PVC figures on the way!

Since its debut this April at C2E2 I've enjoyed keeping up Mystical Warriors of the Ring, a very cool indie mini figure line based on original anthropomorphic wrestler characters and the stories surrounding them. While the toys are reminiscent of classic mini figures like M.U.S.C.L.E. as well as modern ones like O.M.F.G., there's been one main difference from those types of lines: MWOTR figures have been produced in a harder resin material instead of a more flexible plastic. Until now, that is. Fantastic Plastic Toys revealed this week that figures from the line would soon make their debut in PVC!

The initial PVC figures will consist of three characters that haven't yet been produced, even in resin. The roundup includes gorilla guy Kayin Kungaa, the spidery six-armed Widowmaker and an "unrobed" version of tiger-man Sheldon Sabre. While the photos here show the figures in a test shot orange color, the actual PVC release will offer the figures in both flesh and bright red varieties.

The plan is for the PVC figures to debut for sale at the Onell booth at NYCC next month, and you should also be able to pick them up at the Fantastic Plastic Toys online store on a first-come, first-served basis. If the higher price point of the resin figures was preventing you from diving into MWOTR before, you should be happy to learn that you'll be able to snag the set of three PVC figures for somewhere around $10.

You can read more about the PVC release and what it means for the line overall in this blog post on the MWOTR site.

Personally, I think this is awesome news and hope we see many other MWOTR characters in PVC down the line. Future runs will be determined by how well this one is received, so if you dig these guys be sure to grab some when you can!

Mystical Warriors of the Ring: Leo Corazon

When I went to C2E2 back in April, one of the coolest toys I picked up there was the debut set from an indie line called Mystical Warriors of the Ring, a universe of animal wrestlers created by Fantastic Plastic Toys and produced in collaboration with Marty "The Godbeast" Hansen and various other artists. In my initial post on the line I covered the debut set in detail, including the first two figures--Goliath and Ulric Wolfrom--as well as its wrestling ring and packaging. Since then, Fantastic Plastic Toys has unleashed the line's second release--the lion wrestler Leo Corazon. The release was titled "War Games," centered around the story of Leo going up against Ulric in the ring.

As with the first two figures, Leo was released in a few different color options: Metallic orange, Aztec gold and thermal color change orange/yellow. Once again, I got the color change material. As I mentioned before, there's something about it that gives the figures a slightly translucent appearance which makes them look extra cool. When placed in warm water, Leo changes from a deep orange to a bright lemon yellow. Both colors are very appealing and apropos for the lion-nature of the character. I really love how for a short time when the colors are transitioning, you can make Leo a mixture of both orange and yellow. The colors really make the figure pop.

As for the sculpt itself, Leo is very nicely detailed for his small 1.5" size (Goliath the crocodile is still the massive giant when it comes to MWOTR) and comes in a basic-but-battle-ready stance that makes him look like he's standing in the ring roaring, about to pounce at any second. One of my favorite little details on the design is how his tail wraps around his left leg. As far as material, Leo is done in the same urethane material as the past figures, which gives him the feel of a light, hard plastic. It should also be noted that The Godbeast does an excellent job with the casting of these figures--they come out looking incredibly clean; in terms of casting I can't really find any flaws on my Leo figure, which isn't something that can be said about the majority of indie toys.

There was once again a lot of work put into the presentation of this MWOTR release. Leo came packaged individually on a firm cardboard backing featuring cool artwork of him on the back, with the figure placed in a plastic bubble that can be reattached. Also included are a a few different trading cards featuring art by Nathan Newell and Levi Hoffmeier, a larger card with the backstory of the Leo vs. Ulric match, and a realistic event ticket for the match. All of these added elements really help make the MWOTR releases extra special.

Leo quickly sold out when he went up for sale earlier this month, but a post on the MWOTR website indicated that a re-release could potentially happen, so be sure to follow the site for any updates and that and other news with the line.

I have to say, probably what I love most about Mystical Warriors of the Ring is that it's founded upon such big ideas. The creators aren't just making figures, they're making a multifaceted little toy world consisting of involved character stories, a range of corresponding artwork, accessories, carefully-crafted and detailed packaging, animation and more. You have to admire the passion that's obviously going into this line. I am definitely a fan, and am looking forward to the next release, Johnny "Treegarr" Stumpz, which comes out in August.
