Micro Bastards
A few days ago I did a post about how you should vote for Jimmy Rommel and Eric Nilla's Universe of Violence line as "Best Mini Series" in the Designer Toy Awards, and also how you should vote for Jimmy, a.k.a Ironhaus Productions, in the "Break-Through Artist" category. Well, here's more evidence why Mr. Rommel deserves your attention. Behold his latest release--Micro Bastards!
Micro Bastards aren't unlike Universe of Violence or another of Jimmy's projects, Gorewad Monsters, in that they're brutish little rubber monster dudes with cool sculpts and a lot of personality. But at around 1.5" each they're quite a bit smaller than UoV figures and a bit taller/bulkier than the average Gorewad, so I guess you could say they are sort of like a mashup of the two.
Earlier this month Jimmy unleashed the first sets of the Bastards via his newly-opened Storenvy store, offering four different sculpts--three common and one chase. He was cool enough to hook me up with all four of the little miscreants, and I of course immediately got the itch to photograph and write about them. So here we are. Let's take a look at each of the four Micro Bastards, as named by Jimmy himself:
Dirtbag is a rat Bastard, literally. This vermin dude is one of my favorites for sure, and probably the sculpt that grabbed me the most when I first saw pictures of the line on the Ironhaus blog. I love his pose, like he's beckoning you to come join him in world domination. I am also struck by all the detail on this small figure, from his fur to his belt to his double-tail (one tail is not enough for this crazy rat). My Dirtbag, like three other of my Micro Bastards, came in a glossy black which suits the character well.
Coral Golem is definitely the brute of the bunch, taller and a good deal wider than the other three Bastards. I was originally thinking of him as a sludge or lava monster until Jimmy mentioned he was calling him the "Coral Golem," which then made perfect sense. Whatever you want to imagine him being made of, he's awesome. I think it's cool that the nature of the sculpt sort of camouflages all the little details when seen from afar so he just looks like a big lumbering lump of badass, but when you have him in hand and look at him up close all the individual elements pop out, like his eyes and mouth and his hook hand (not sure if this was intentional, but there's a little circle on the hand that looks like an eye, which makes the hook look like beak, which makes his whole hand look like it's taking the form of an angry bird head). Love it!
Filth here is a hooded, pig-faced little bugger who looks like he woke up on the wrong side of the sty. I am a big fan of all this guy's personality, from his dynamic pose to his hoofed left foot to all the crotchety-ness in his face. I also really like the brown-green/olive color mine came in. It works nicely for the character and really shows off the detail.
Grady stands out from the other three Micro Bastards in that there's not much monster-like about him. Instead, he appears to be a human (or at least close to human) wrestler dude, which Jimmy mentioned he came up with for a comic he was working on and then incorporated into the Micro Bastards line. Grady reminds me a lot of one of the less-freaky characters you'd find in the M.U.S.C.L.E. or Kinnikuman lines. In fact, he looks like he could have been sculpted to be a nod to those series. Although I always favor the weirder, more monstrous characters, Grady is yet another cool sculpt that I am happy to add to my collection.
So there you have it, Micro Bastards series one. Like what you see? Keep an eye on the Ironhaus store and snag some of these guys for yourself, as Jimmy plans to regularly make sets available.

Blackstar companion figures: demon minions!
As I mentioned when I wrote about the ghost mini figures that came with Kenner Ghostbusters action figures, often toy accessories can be just as cool--sometimes even cooler--than the main attraction. Some of my other favorite "companion" figures of all time came with Galoob's 1980s Blackstar action figures.

Not only do I like the Blackstar demons because they make me feel instantly nostalgic, I also think it's an excellent sculpt. This guy has a lot of personality. Just look at his face--he looks like a nasty, scheming little bugger. He's the perfect minion.
In my childhood I had no idea that the green demon I carried around was a Blackstar toy, or even what Blackstar was. But years later when browsing toys online I not only discovered what series he belonged to, but that he came in more colors. I quickly tracked down pink and orange ones, and just this week finally got a blue one. I think there's also a red variation that I have yet to add to my collection. I also found out that these demon figures came packaged with the line's evil character action figures, while the good characters came packaged with gnome-like "Trobbit" companions.
In addition to the original demon sculpt, some of the later figures came packed with different evil companions (which I believe were also referred to as demons, although didn't look anything like the original ones). You can see a couple of those in the photo to the right. In my opinion not quite as cool as the others, but I do like the little green armored cyclops dude quite a bit.
I love the toys that the '80s fantasy craze produced--from Masters of the Universe to Arco's The Other World and Dragons N Monsters to LJN's Dungeons and Dragons--and Blackstar figures, including these companion figures, definitely rank high among my favorites.
What do you think of these guys? And what are some of your favorite companion figures?

Vote for Universe of Violence in the Designer Toy Awards!
Over the past year I've been really impressed with a lot of the indie toy lines being unleashed into the world. There's so much creativity out there, and it's really exciting that fellow fans of classic mini figure lines like MUSCLE and Monster in My Pocket are keeping awesome new mini figures for sale even if they're rarely seen from mainstream toy companies these days. Probably the line I've been most impressed with is Universe of Violence from IroNilla Productions, a.k.a. Eric Nilla and Jimmy Rommel. They started the line last year and this year have been tearing it up by releasing a great new sculpt every single month. That's why I was happy to see UoV nominated for "Best Mini Series" in the 2013 Designer Toy Awards!
I voted for them as soon as I saw it, and I plan to vote again as many times as possible (you can vote every 24 hours). If you're also a fan of what Jimmy and Eric do, be sure to click here, find Universe of Violence at the bottom of the page, and vote! Then vote again. And again. And keep voting.
ALSO, Jimmy has been nominated on his own in a separate category, "Best Break-Through Artist"! In addition to his part in UoV, Jimmy has created a bunch more cool stuff like Gorewad Monsters, HORDE and the brand new Micro Bastards, all of which you can find more about on his blog. So vote for Ironhaus Productions in that category here!
Here are some more pics of Jimmy and Eric's creations for more proof of why they deserve your votes:

Braindead Zombies
WHAT: The zombie craze continues. These guys are new figures I found the other day at the dollar store that, like S.L.U.G. Zombies, Z.O.M.B.I.E. and Zombie Planet, take advantage of the current popularity of zombies in toy form. They are a bit taller than S.L.U.G.s and glow in the dark. Unfortunately, they also have the "put them in water and then grow" gimmick, which would be fine except that means they're made out of that funky, totally not durable grow material. That's why I got a set to open and a set to keep sealed (totally worth doing at only $1 each). I actually really like the looks of these things. The sculpts are fun and that glow green color of their skin is pretty cool. My favorite zombie is the guy in the middle with the huge head and mouth. He just looks so demented.
WHEN: I bought them in May 2013.
WHERE: Found at Dollar Tree, a chain of North American discount stores.
WHO: Alley Oop, LLC/Inspirefly Toys, LLC. They are shown as one of the products at inspireflytoys.com.
