Diener Mythological Creatures

Minotaur
Birdman (Roc?)
Medusa

UPDATE: Also check out the more recent post on these figures for better photos and additional information.

What: In addition to the Space Creatures and Space Raiders lines, Diener Industries produced a lesser-known collection of one-color plastic and rubber monster figures based on mythology. Sculpts include Medusa, a minotaur, a centaur, a unicorn, a dragon (basilisk?) and a birdman (roc?). As with the Space Creatures, I have seen versions made in both a harder plastic as well as a softer eraser-like rubber.

When: While I got these figures in the late 1990s, I'd guess they were first produced alongside the Space Creatures, in the 1970s-1980s.

Where: U.S. (at least). Sold in dime/variety stores and probably other places.

Who: Diener Industries, Inc.

  1. I wasn't aware that anybody had these let alone remember them. I have all these and I remember getting them in, say, 1980 for 25 cents a piece near the register at Kay Bee Toys in the mall in Staten Island.

  2. I had some of these and the Space Creatures in the harder plastic versions, and I know my Mom bought them for me around Halloween around 1986 or so at an Acme supermarket. They came bagged (Mythological creatures in one set, monsters in another). I'd like to find these again but can only seem to find the softer rubber eraser versions online. I'm guessing the versions I had were possibly done in harder plastic to appeal to kids who liked the M.U.S.C.L.E. toyline (like me) but were made in much less abundance.

    1. Thanks for the comment! The ones I have are mostly the hard ones, which I got off eBay years ago. I always wondered exactly when/how the harder ones were released in relation to the softer ones.
